Say Yes Guilford Offering $10,000 HBCU Scholarships

News Release

GREENSBORO, NC (January 9, 2018) – Starting with students entering college in the fall of 2018, Say Yes Guilford is offering a limited number of scholarships to eligible Say Yes scholars admitted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). Selected students will receive scholarship grants of up to $10,000 to pay toward the cost of attendance, including but not limited to tuition.

Funding for the scholarships comes from a generous donor to Say Yes to Education’s national program. Scholarships to HBCU’s will be divided among selected students in each of the three Say Yes communitywide chapters (Buffalo, Syracuse, Guilford County). Those students awarded Say Yes scholarships to an HBCU will be eligible to receive the award for up to five years and the scholarship can be used by this year’s graduating high school seniors to attend any HBCU in the nation, public or private, with the following exception:

In instances in which students have been admitted to a North Carolina public college or university that is designated as an HBCU, or to Bennett College or Simmons College of Kentucky – two private HBCU’s that are members of the Say Yes Higher Education Compact – then Say Yes’s last-dollar tuition policy at those institutions will take precedence, and those students will not be eligible for the $10,000 scholarship.

To apply, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and log into the Say Yes Guilford eScholarship Portal at www.sayyesguilford.org to indicate which HBCU they are applying to along with a personal statement addressing why the student wants to attend an HBCU. Students will also be required to provide a high school transcript (if available) or grade point average, the family’s adjusted gross income, and the expected family contribution noted on their completed FAFSA.

The deadline to complete the application is February 15 and the recipients will be selected by April 2. More information, including frequently asked questions about the scholarship, is available online at www.sayyesguilford.org/hbcuscholarships.
