Say Yes Guilford/Greensboro Wins FAFSA Challenge
GREENSBORO, NC (September 20, 2017) – The National College Access Network (NCAN) and the Kresge Foundation have awarded Say Yes Guilford $75,000 for winning the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Challenge. Through concerted efforts to increase FAFSA completion among Guilford County Schools students, the Say Yes Guilford team earned the highest completion percentage (66.03 percent) and the biggest increase in completion (13.8 percent) among 21 other challenge communities.
Say Yes Guilford partnered with Guilford County Schools, UNC Greensboro, Guilford Technical Community College, the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC), and the Carolina College Advising Corps to implement its FAFSA completion efforts throughout the 2016-17 school year. The goal was to increase FAFSA completion for the class of 2017, compared to a baseline year of completion for the class of 2015.
As part of the competition, Say Yes Guilford worked closely with Guilford County Schools guidance counselors and college advisors to enhance education and awareness of the FAFSA, established FAFSA completion events at Guilford Technical Community College each month throughout the school year, and initiated an in-school challenge among Guilford County Schools high schools. From January through March 2017, Say Yes hosted competitions in two separate categories through traditional high schools and academy/early/middle colleges. The five schools with the highest level of FAFSA completion increase were awarded $5 per senior.
Say Yes Guilford/Greensboro was originally tapped in May of 2016 as one of 22 US communities to receive $55,000 for the National College Access Network (NCAN) FAFSA Completion Challenge. The FAFSA Completion Challenge was funded through a $1.6 million grant from The Kresge Foundation.
